Newton's Laws of Motion

Newton's Three Laws of Motion

1st Law:  An object at rest will stay at rest and an object in motion will stay in motion unless acted on by an unbalanced force.
  • This law is often called the "Law of Inertia".
  • Take a look at the slow motion video below from our experiment in class
          Marbles rolling down ramps

2nd Law: Acceleration is produced when a force acts on a mass.
  • Equation: F = m x a
  • More Mass = More Force Needed to Accelerate that object
  • Check out this video about Football and Newton's Second Law http://goo.gl/yRozT6
  • Example: Dog Sledding (http://goo.gl/x36QuF)
One dog pulling a sled, illustrating f = ma
3rd Law:  For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
